Welcome to "Roots"
program.
What's your name? What's your family name?

Why did your parents choose this name for you?
In "Roots" we will discover that it is possible to learn a lot about people from their first names and family names.

We will explore our first name, the first names of our parents, our grandfathers and grandmothers and their parents;
we will discuss various kinds of first names;
we will discover the origin of our family name;
we will learn why first names and family names changed;
we will build a family tree which will take us on a journey to the different countries in which our family lived.

First Name
In this unit we will explore our first name and what it means. We will discover what we can learn about a person from his first name. We will compare our first name to those of our parents, our grandfathers and grandmothers and their parents. We will examine what influences the choice of a name, build a database of names from various time periods, read a story about changing a name and discuss it.

My name is Rotem and my grandfather's name is Abraham.

You will try do understand the origin and meaning of your family name and the family names of your friends. What can you learn from them about the history of your family?
