In this lesson we will learn about the generations of family names and get to know various kinds of family names. 

Like all lessons in 'Roots', this lesson is divided into 3 parts. If you have already completed a part of the lesson, skip to the next part.
Personal Activity:
1. Enter the Information Center and learn about various kinds of family names of the Jewish people and their origins.
2. Look at the table of personal Jewish names and discover their origins.
3. Play the "Names Game".
Group Activity:
1. View the results of the "Names Game".
2. Suggest family names for personalities of the Jewish and Israeli culture according to their occupation.
3. . Examine the most common family names in your area.
Interactive Part:
1. The group administrator sends the results of the discussion to the members of the partner group.

Group Activity
A. Suggest family names according to the occupation

Here is a list of names of personalities of the Jewish and Israeli culture. Choose five of them and suggest family names for them according to their occupation. (If you do not know their occupations, look at various internet sites.)

For example: Naomi Shemer – Naomi Zemer (Song) The group administrator writes the names you suggested and sends the list to your partner group.


New Family Names

B. The most common names in your area/community

Look into the phone directory of your area/community and search for the ten most common names.
One of the group members writes the list of the most common names on the blackboard.
C. Discussion

Look at the names and lead a discussion. Consider the following:

  • Did you discover unknown names?
  • Categorize these names.
  • After you learned about categories of names, what can you learn about the countries of origin people in your city/community came from?
  • Which additional conclusions can be drawn from the analysis of the family names you found (e.g. native language of community members, their former occupation, etc.)?

   The group administrator sends the results of the discussion to your friends in the partner group.

Interview your parents, discover the origin of your family name and interesting stories connected to it. Attention: Is the family name connected to the occupation of one of the family members or to his residence?
