Unit 1: A Personal Journey to Myself
Session 1: Criteria of Identity

In this lesson you will explore the elements of personal and group identity.
Like all lessons in 'Home and Community', this lesson is divided into 3 parts.
If you have already completed a part of the lesson, skip to the next part.
Personal Activity
1. Think about the criteria of your personal identity.
2. We will use the Information Center to get additional ideas regarding identity.
3. Fill in the answers in the Writing Page.
4. We will use the "personal characteristics" tool.
Group Activity
1. We will access the information center to discover the meaning of "group identity".
2. We will observe the group statistics and discuss the meaning of "group identity".
3. We will decide upon a "group message".
Interactive Activity
1. We will send our group's statistics and message to our partner group.
2. We will write personal stories about our group's list of characteristics and post them on our forum.

Personal Activity
In this section you will make a decision about your personal identity.

When you define your identity consider the following:

  • Which criteria would you include in your identity card if you had the opportunity to prepare it?

  • In your opinion, what would someone from another Jewish community like to know about you?

  • What would you like to know about someone from another Jewish community?

If you need additional ideas on the subject 'identity', use the Information Center.

Information Center:

Find additional ideas on 'identity'.
Try this:

With the knowledge you collected answer the following questions:

  • Which criteria would you include in your identity card if you had the opportunity to prepare it?

  • In your opinion, what would someone from another Jewish community like to know about you?

  • What would you like to know about someone from another Jewish community?

Fill in the
Writing Page.
Are you ready?

After examining the criteria and examples on 'identity' fill in the criteria you chose for your personal identity.

This tool has the following components:
  1. 'The General Options for Criteria': Here you find a list of criteria from which you can choose the most fitting for your personal identity.

  2. 'The Additional Criteria': Here you can add your own criteria which did not appear in the first section.

  3. 'General Information': Here you fill in general information about yourself (your country of birth, attitude towards religion, hobbies, etc.)

Go to:
Personal Criteria for Identity.

Group Activity
A. What is a "group identity"?

After completing the personal activities, we will establish a group identity.

But first, we need to define "group identity."
The Information Center will help us with that.

Access the Information Center
to define "group identity"
and it's significance.

B. Statistics of Group Identity Criteria

View the statistics of group identity criteria. There you will find the statistical data chosen by the group members.
The statistics are divided into two sections:

  1. Statistics of general criteria.
An example: 50% of pupils chose their first name as an important factor of their identity; 10% their astrological sign.
  2. List of additional criteria your group members chose.
Enter
and view the statistics of your group criteria

C. Discussion

Conduct a discussion about the group's statistics, using the following points:

  • Which criteria were similar to those of your friends?
  • Which criteria were different?
  • Which additional criteria were chosen by your friends? What does it tell about us?
  • Which criteria dominated the statistics? Is it worth adding them to the identity card?
  • What does the group's statistical break-down reveal about the group?
  • Do you agree with the group identity chosen? Create a group message.

Interactive Activity
A. Discovering the group's statistics and message

The group manager will send the group's statistics, message and conclusion to the partner group.
In the following lesson we will examine our partner group's message and compare it to our own message.

Please NOTE: Only the group administrator (in most cases the teacher) can enter this section.

The group identity criteria are automatically sent to the partner group.

ADMINISTRATOR: Log in before entering the group identity tool.
> This enables you to view and edit the criteria from any computer and location in the world.

If you are not the group administrator:
Clicking on the 'Group identity' button shows you the criteria chosen by your group adminstrator.

The group's statistics and message
Fill in your group identity criteria (administrator)
or view the chosen group identity criteria.

(Only a group administrator
can add and change criteria)
B. After deciding upon the criteria

Each member enters the 'Forum' (where meetings with the partner group take place).

In the Forum complete the following task: Write a short story about yourself.

When you write your personal story, consider your group identity criteria.

In the next lesson you will reply to the stories your partner group wrote in the forum.

The most interesting stories will receive the most replies.

Enter the Forum
and publish your personal story.
